Time Allocation and Task Juggling⇤

چکیده
A single worker is assigned a stream of projects over time. We provide a tractable theoretical model in which the worker allocates her time among di↵erent projects. When the worker works on too many projects at the same time, the output rate decreases and the time it takes to complete each project grows. We call this phenomenon “task juggling,” and we argue that this phenomenon is pervasive in the workplace. We show that task juggling is a strategic substitute of worker e↵ort. We then present an augmented model, in which task juggling is the result of lobbying by clients, or co-workers, each of whom seeks to get the worker to apply e↵ort to his project ahead of the others’. We take the model to new data on judicial productivity.

Cycle Time Optimization of Processes Using an Entropy-Based Learning for Task Allocation
Cycle time optimization could be one of the great challenges in business process management. Although there is much research on this subject, task similarities have been paid little attention. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to optimize cycle time by minimizing entropy of work lists in resource allocation while keeping workloads balanced. The idea of the entropy of work lists comes fr...

Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) is a complex information system that provides designing, administrating, and improving the business processes. Task allocation to human resources is one of the most important issues which should be managed more efficiently in BPMS. Task allocation algorithms are defined in order to meet the various policies of organizations. The most important of these...
متن کاملThe Inefficiency of Worker Time Use ∗
Much work is carried out in short, interrupted segments. This phenomenon, which we label task juggling, has been overlooked by economists. We study the work schedules of some judges in Italy documenting that they do juggle tasks and that juggling causally lowers their productivity substantially. To measure the size of this effect, we show that although all these judges receive the same workload...

Objectives: The role of cognitive process for postural control was shown in dual task studies. However, there was no definite evidence how verbal instructions influence the allocation of attention to postural control. This study determined whether young and elderly adult are able to deliberately control the resource allocation when performing a sensorimotor and cognitive task simultaneously and...
متن کاملPostural organisation during cascade juggling: influence of expertise.
The present study investigated how posture is organised during three-ball cascade juggling according to expertise. We hypothesized that the juggling task would place constraints on the postural organisation mode and that the posture-juggling coupling would be increased with expertise. Two groups, intermediates and experts, were asked to perform a postural-cascade juggling task. A three-dimensio...
